3 Learning Management Systems for On-the-Job Training Programs

My dog came from a shelter (yay adoption). He was already a year old, no longer a puppy, and you might think that means he was already trained, at least to some extent. He might have a grasp of “sit” and “stay,” right?

Not my Kona!

Training a dog, especially one that isn’t a puppy anymore, is a lot like doing on-the-job training. It’s got to be consistent, fast, and thorough.

If you don’t do a good job of communicating and teaching, the results can be disastrous. And while a dog-related disaster is more about spilled trash and destroyed shoes than mishandled accounts and workers’ compensation lawsuits, the need for quick and measurable results remains the same.

An on-the-job training program demands a learning management system (LMS) that can move with your employees, so mobile optimization is a must. The ability to offer microlearning in some form is also huge, as employees don’t have hours to devote to compliance lessons, but anyone can find a spare five minutes.

A learning management system that wants to flex and fit for on-the-job training also needs to offer strong reporting options for training managers, so you can step in and make quick corrections and adjustments if anything goes wrong.

With that in mind, I compared three LMSs that bill themselves as great for on-the job training to see how they stack up. They’re organized below, alphabetically, so that you can see for yourself which program might be right for your OTJ training program.

Oh, and if you’re wondering, here’s my dog.

He’s a good boy

On-the-job training programs

1. Grovo

Pricing: Grovo starts at $69 per user per year

Capterra Rating: It is rated 4.5/5 stars by 15 reviewers

Grovo is an LMS that focuses on the microlearning method (which you can read all about right here: 4 Microlearning Tools You Haven’t Considered). By sticking to a 60-second video-based microlearning platform, Grovo optimizes their content for learners who are already at work. Video-based training is extremely engaging and may help you rise to new, stronger results if your learners have been struggling.

They offer full reporting on learning results so trainers can keep on top of the lessons their new employees are learning.

What people are saying

It is helpful to see the performance levels of staff members in terms of number of views, speed in which they completed the training, and overall score. This allows us to see their potential and interest from a different perspective compared with routine observation.”

“This platform has made learning so much fun for the team. From adding employees to tracking and assessing their learning and performance it’s been an awesome experience. I will definitely recommend this platform to all my contacts.”

“The platform is very user friendly and the material is cutting edge. The videos keep employees engaged while learning. The short bursts of information are a great way to keep employees yearning for more. Having the ability to upload our industry specific information is genius!”

2. Mindflash

Pricing: Mindflash’s basic package starts at $599 per month for up to 500 users

Capterra Rating: It is rated 4.5/5 stars by 82 reviewers

If you’re looking for a way to juggle multiple forms of deployment—mobile and computer based, for instance—you’ll appreciate Mindflash’s cloud-based, multi-platform delivery service. Access it from a laptop, tablet, phone… whatever is handy for your employees will work for Mindflash.

Since mobile learning is huge right now, this service is a great one for any business that needs to train employees on the move.

In addition, Mindflash has a visually engaging reporting system that shows a graphics-based display, so if you (or your other training staff) are a visual thinker, you’ll appreciate the lack of dry numbers.

What people are saying

Tracking users’ activity takes me minutes now instead of hours. We have a lot of annual requirements I need to track and report back to the government and this is allowing me much more time to work on material and not have to monitor end users.”

“I’ve been a user for over a year now, and the ease of use is a huge reason why we purchased the service and also expanded. It’s been a great value and I would recommend it to anybody needing an LMS system.”

“Using Mindflash for both internal and external training allows my company to provide very good training that is clear, informative and easy in-training navigation. Mindflash allowed us to fill a missing piece too, properly training customers that need our support installing our products matching our stringent specifications. Customer support has been the shining star when there is a question or even when we need introduction to numerous Mindflash administrators.”
