4 Event Mobile Apps to Increase Attendee Engagement

The future is mobile. This has been true since the computer was invented, and over the decades computers have gotten smaller and smaller. Now we hold computers in our palms with computing power that dwarfs the systems that landed men on the moon.

Mobile internet browsing has surpassed desktop computer browsing and mobile browsing is now one of our main sources for computing.

What does this mean for event management? It means that mobile apps are the future of event planning and attendee interaction. Even now, event planners embrace mobile technology through livestreaming on social media, attendee tracking, event fundraising, and live data tracking. Event gamification can increase engagement, and lead retrieval can help you in future event planning opportunities.

As event management software continues its transition over to a completely mobile ecosystem, there are several mobile event apps currently on the market that provide engagement methods and data for the planner, and convenience for the attendee.

I’ve chosen four apps that benefit both event planners and event attendees, while catering to both corporate and non-corporate event planning. These four apps are listed in alphabetical order.

Hope this list helps!

1. CrowdCompass

Crowdcompass by Cvent will keep your guests informed while providing you with the necessary information to build on event successes. This app uses a beacon system to provide your attendees with up-to-date activity feeds and interactive event maps, while creating a social environment with attendee messaging and social media connectivity.

On the event management side, this app allows you to collect data on attendees with polling features, attendee counts, lead retrieval, and return-on-investment metrics.

Judging by Cvent’s corporate focus, it is easy to assume this app is built for the same audience, unlike some of the other apps on this list.

Features for attendees:

  • Activity feed
  • Attendee Messaging
  • Gamification
  • Interactive maps
  • Personalized agendas
  • Push messaging
  • Social media integration

Features for event planners:

  • Beacons
  • Custom branding
  • Lead retrieval
  • Multi-event management
  • Personalized agendas
  • Polling and surveys
  • ROI reporting
  • Social wall capabilities
  • 24/7 live customer support

Compatibility: iOS and Android

Pricing: Price quotes available based on user’s needs

Best for: Corporate event planning—Cvent has geared themselves towards corporate event planning based on their pricing and features, such as multi-event planning and in-depth ROI reporting.

2. EventsXD

EventsXD is another fully stocked event mobile app that covers almost everything you would expect from an event management system, including ticketing, session tracking, event floor plans, agenda planning, and social integration.

The one area where EventsXD excels is the free price tag for access to the majority of the features. The only features that require payment are ticketing fees, custom branding, push notifications, private event codes, and sponsor showcasing.

Features for attendees:

  • Announcements
  • Personalized agendas
  • Private event access
  • Push notifications
  • Social integration
  • Speaker bios

Features for event planners:

  • Custom branding
  • Event portal
  • Floor planning
  • Personalized agendas
  • Sponsor showcasing
  • Ticketing
  • Website building

Compatibility: iOS, Android, Windows Phone

Pricing: Free for most features except custom branding ($19.99), push notifications ($49.99), private event access ($99.99), and sponsor showcasing ($99.99). Ticketing fee is 2.5% per ticket (capped at $8.99) plus a 2.9% + $.30 credit card processing fee.

Best for: Non-corporate event planning—EventsXD offers many of its features for free, making it best for small event planning businesses and nonprofits. Larger organizations are able to use Events XD, however the features they would most likely use, such as custom branding and sponsor showcasing, come at a price.

3. Pathable

Pathable has features for both event attendees and event managers—however, based on their website, it is more focused on the latter. This app includes personal agendas, private meeting scheduling, interactive maps, and basic attendee networking features (messaging, profiles, and discussion forums).

However, where the app really shines is its data-driven approach to help event planners increase engagement and return-on-investment through lead retrieval, registration software integration, and sponsor showcasing.

This app caters to a more business-oriented market than more attendee-driven apps like Whova and EventsXD.

Features for attendees:

  • Attendee chat
  • Attendee profiles
  • Interactive maps
  • Personalized agendas
  • Private meeting scheduling
  • Registration integration

Features for event planners:

  • Branded landing pages
  • Lead retrieval
  • Personalized agendas
  • Polling and surveys
  • Seamless transition to desktop
  • Sponsor showcasing

Compatibility: iOS, Android, Windows Phone, and Blackberry

Pricing: Price quotes available based on user’s needs

Best for: Corporate event planning —Pathable focuses a lot of its attention on data collection, custom branding, and future lead retrieval, which is a major asset for large corporate events.

4. Whova

Whova covers most event mobile app needs except ticketing capabilities and beacon technology. In practically every other aspect, Whova delivers features that both event attendees and event planners will find useful, including agendas, interactive maps, live polling, surveys, social integration, and attendee chats.

This app also includes less common features such as gamification capabilities for event attendee fun, business card scanning/exchanging, attendee profiles, and note-taking. Judging by these features, it seems as though Whova is not only focused on increasing the ease of navigating events, but also supplanting the need for social networks like LinkedIn for event networking.

Features for attendees:

  • Attendee chat
  • Attendee profiles
  • Bulletin boards
  • Business card scanning/exchanging
  • Document sharing
  • Gamification
  • Interactive maps
  • Note taking
  • Offline accessibility
  • Personalized agendas
  • Push notifications
  • Social integration

Features for event planners:

  • Lead retrieval
  • Note-taking
  • Personalized agendas
  • Polling and surveys
  • Sponsor showcasing

Compatibility: iOS and Android

Pricing: Price quotes available based on user’s needs

Best for: Non-corporate events—the features list is heavily skewed towards the event attendee, which is more beneficial for smaller, non-corporate event planning. This event mobile app is best for networking events when considering the social networking, business card sharing, and document sharing features.
