The Top 5 Free and Affordable Grant Management Software Products

I recently purchased an iPad Mini to help me with task management and note taking while in meetings. I chose a slightly older model for the iPad Mini because I realized that I didn’t need the biggest and newest piece of technology to accomplish the tasks I purchased the tablet for. This decision alone saved me $500. Cha-ching!

If you are running a small nonprofit seeking small grants for projects or you are a small organization dealing in awarding grants to those worthy of your time and money, you don’t always need the top-of-the-line grant management software. Opt for a free or more affordable software option that will accomplish the essentials of your operation.

To help you explore your options further, here are the top five free and affordable grant management software products that will make the most of your awards processes.

Free Grant Management Software

It turns out that building grant management software is no small request, therefore the list of quality free systems is a short one. I was able to identify two options which promised all of the necessary features as well as a free price tag.

1. Fluxx

Fluxx got its start with Grantmaker, a paid, cloud-based grants management solution aimed at grant-making organizations of all sizes. Their free offering, Grantseeker,  is a cloud-based solution that targets grant recipients.

Grantseeker lets you manage proposals and reports, keep track of tasks and deadlines, and measure success through a dedicated dashboard. For support, Grantseeker includes access to Fluxx’s knowledge base, as well as email support during business hours.

2. Oracle PeopleSoft Enterprise Grants Management

Oracle is a solid open-source alternative for most of your software needs, including their PeopleSoft system. PeopleSoft is first and foremost an enterprise project management system, however, their Enterprise Grants Management add-on is a solid choice for nonprofits not looking for specialized software.

Grant Maker or Grant Seeker: Grant Seeker

  • Asset tracking
  • Audit management
  • Compliance management
  • Contract management
  • Cost tracking
  • Depreciation management
  • Project costing

Affordable Grant Management Software

What does “affordable” mean? Affordable is a subjective term depending on the size of the organization making a purchase, however, for the sake of setting a standard, I determined any software offered for $100/month or less to be an affordable option for small-midsize nonprofits.

Many systems fell outside of this range, but these four stood out from crowd-based on the fact that they were, in fact, grant management systems, and not smaller add-ons to a larger software option. If you are looking to pay a price for grant management software, you ought to have a system dedicated to the task it was purchased for.

Some software options were listed at their lower tier level due to their higher tiers pricing themselves outside of my $100/month limit.

1. GrantHub

GrantHub is a fully comprehensive grant management system which covers your acquisition process from proposal to award. This software promises to streamline your grant proposal process with application cloud storage, which allows you to quickly refer back to previous applications and proposals instead of starting from scratch each time.

GrantHub works seamlessly with other spreadsheet programs such as Google Docs and Microsoft Excel in order to make your transition from a manual system to their specialized program as easy as possible.

Sample Testimonial:

“Anytime I have a question I can simply start a chat session, pick up the phone, or send an email and they not only respond quickly to answer my question, but also take the time to really understand my situation. The product is so intuitive that this doesn’t happen often, but it is great to know the support is there if I ever need it.”

  • Jaime Hansen, Development Director, ACLU of Idaho

2. Wizehive Pro

Wizehive prides itself on being a fully customizable, self-tailoring, and easily integrate-able grant management software. Their many clients include TD Bank, the National Science Foundation, and the George W. Bush Presidential Center. Wizehive covers all aspects of the grant proposal and management process, including applications, process organization, and reporting.

Wizehive is fully integrate-able with over five hundred software applications using their open API, including major email providers, accounting systems, and spreadsheet programs. Their “pro” tier falls under my $100/month limit, includes access for five administrators, and room to process up to five hundred applications.

Grant Maker or Grant Seeker: Both

Software Type: Web-based

Features:

  • Compliance management
  • Contract management
  • Grant award tracking
  • Online applications
  • Self-registration

Pricing: $79/month

Capterra User Rating: 5/5 Stars

Sample Testimonial:

“We have used Wizehive to put our scholarship applications online. The customer service and technical-support is amazing. They respond to questions in a timely manner. The system has worked well for us. The families applying for scholarships have been happy with the system.”

  • Tziporah Altman-Shafer, Jewish Education Community Planner, Coalition for Jewish Learning

3. Award Force for Grants Starter

Award Force is a unique grant management software due to it’s more visually appealing user interface and unlike the other options in this list, this software is geared exclusively towards grant makers, rather than grant seekers or both. This software will help organizations draft, market, and process grants for individuals and other groups in order to make sure money is well spent on projects that matter.

Unfortunately, the only tier that fit within the $100/month limit was their starter package, which rests against the limit at $99/month. Luckily with the starter package, you are given all of the basic necessary tools to conduct grant management including moderating submissions, email integrations, and application landing pages for groups and individuals.
