Pen-and-paper tests are becoming a thing of the past, and with so many ways to innovate upon the traditional exam structure, it’s easy to see why. Virtual classrooms aren’t necessarily replacing physical ones, but they are allowing businesses and universities more flexibility when it comes to training or testing.

This is especially important now with the rise of a remote workforce, making it an ideal time to explore your exam software options.

All that said, evaluating your options for online testing tools doesn’t have to be a production. We’re here to help you—we’ll highlight some of the most popular free exam software available, and also help you decide if you should consider a paid solution instead.

What is free exam software?

Companies that offer free exam software primarily earn revenue by enticing organizations to purchase expansions or a premium version of their service with more features.

For this reason, the following free solutions come with a limited set of features and also offer paid plans that are worth your consideration.

This article looks at five free exam software options. See the full list of free exam software solutions here.

All of the free options listed here include these common, essential features:

  • Assessments
  • Automatic grading
  • Online tests
  • Question library

Products are listed alphabetically. To learn more about the methodology we used to feature products, click here.

5 free and popular exam software systems

1. ClassMarker

ClassMarker is a cloud-based online testing software that’s used by businesses, schools, and universities. It works with most web browsers and allows test-makers to easily embed exams on their own websites.

Instructors can create up to 100 tests per month with the free version of ClassMarker. It also offers a handful of unique features in addition to the foundational ones, including the ability to set time limits and availability dates for exams, and the opportunity to sell tests you’ve created online.

Key features offered in the free plan include:

  • Time limits
  • Randomization

However, paying for one of ClassMarker’s upgraded plans does unlock a few notable features, namely the capability to upload audio, video, and images, as well as integration with ClassMarker’s webhooks and API functionalities. Upgrading also increases the number of exams instructors can create per month.

2. Edbase

Edbase is an online exam software platform for educators and employee trainers. While Edbase’s free plan only allows up to 10 users and 20 tests per month, they make up for these limitations with valuable features such as locked screens during testing, security checks for cheating, and online or offline functionality.

Key features offered in the free plan include:

  • Certification management
  • Question branching
  • Candidate management
  • Surveys and feedback
  • Test scheduling
  • Weighted questions
  • Randomization
  • Time limits
  • Reporting/analytics

Edbase’s paid versions start at $30 per month. Upgrading unlocks many convenient features such as the ability to create courses and classes and keep track of students’ scores in a virtual gradebook.

3. FlexiQuiz

FlexiQuiz is an online test generator with hundreds of configurable features that help create exams or courses. Living up to its name, FlexiQuiz is a flexible option that can be used by individuals, businesses, and universities.

FlexiQuiz’s free plan offers great features such as an unlimited number of quizzes, seven question types to choose from, and a handful of customization options.

That being said, there are also notable restrictions, such as being limited to 10 questions and 20 responses per quiz, lack of multilingual capabilities, and inability to add images, video, and audio. These restrictions are lifted upon upgrading to either their Premium or Enterprise plan, which start at $20 per month.

Key features offered in the free plan include:

  • Certification management
  • Test scheduling
  • Weighted questions
  • Randomization
  • Time limits
  • Reporting/analytics

4. QuestBase

QuestBase is an online assessment solution created by Fidenia that’s used by businesses, governmental organizations, academic institutions, and awarding/accreditation associations.

There are a number of notable features included with QuestBase’s free plan; for example, the number of exams you can create each month is unlimited. You can also import questions from external files and publish your exams online or export them as PDFs.

Key features offered in the free plan include:

  • Certification management
  • Surveys and feedback

The free plan does have its limitations. For large organizations especially, it is worth considering upgrading to Premium because the free plan restricts the number of students that can register to 500.

Upgrading will remove all ads, allow you to customize with your own branding, add high-quality audio and visual elements to tests, and enable QuestBase Secure Browser, a downloadable browser that prevents test takers from printing or copying exam questions.

5. SpeedExam

SpeedExam is online exam software used by a wide variety of industries, including education, recruitment, manufacturing, logistics, banking, and healthcare. Exams created using SpeedExam can be embedded on any site, are accessible on most browsers, and are desktop, tablet, and mobile-friendly.

The free version of SpeedExam allows up to 50 exams (or 5,000 questions) per month, with unlimited candidate accounts, custom notifications, question templates, and certificate building capabilities.

Key features offered in the free plan include:

  • Automated proctoring
  • Certification management
  • Test scheduling
  • Weighted questions
  • Randomization
  • Time limits
  • Reporting/analytics
  • Candidate management
  • Surveys and feedback

SpeedExam’s Professional and Ultimate plans begin at $20 per month with even more useful features such as unlimited instructor accounts, custom branding and email templates, detailed analytics, and their Test Maker Software, which allows learners to take practice exams created from a question bank.

Why you should also consider paid solutions

Before committing to free exam software, it’s best to determine if it’s actually the right choice for your business needs.

You might find that free options lack some of the functionality you get with an upgraded plan. For example, many paid exam tools increase the number of exams you can create per month and allow for more users to interact with the software either as students or instructors. Additionally, paid options allow users to create more interactive exams with images, video, and audio files.

If you’re a very small operation looking for a simple solution, free exam software may work fine for you, but for larger organizations, a paid plan might be necessary because they allow for a greater number of users and exams per month. How we chose featured products

We included the most popular products that both:

  • Offer a free, standalone version of the software (not a trial version of the software that requires you to purchase the product after a limited amount of time).

  • Meet our exam software definition: Exam software is a platform to create online tests, share assignments, calculate scores, and generate progress reports.

We determined the most popular products to feature by choosing those highest ranked in Google search results for “free exam software” during the week of March 30, 2020. The products we chose to feature are listed in alphabetical order, and each has assessment, online testing, and question library functionalities.
